A Spiritual Declaration
Your decision to be baptized in water is a public and spiritual declaration that you are a Christian—a child of God. Jesus instructed his followers in Matthew 28:19 to "go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit."
Jesus Is Who Saves You
Water baptism does not cleanse us of our sins. Jesus' blood cleanses us of our sins.
In Romans 10:9-10, the Apostle Paul writes:
If you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. (NET)

Walk in Newness of Life
Baptism is a symbol of how the believer has been buried with Christ in his death so that he might walk in newness of life, freed from the curse of death.
In Romans 6:6-10, the Apostle Paul writes:
Therefore we have been buried with him through baptism into death, in order that just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too may live a new life. For if we have become united with him in the likeness of his death, we will certainly also be united in the likeness of his resurrection. We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. (For someone who has died has been freed from sin.) Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that since Christ has been raised from the dead, he is never going to die again; death no longer has mastery over him.
